Who I Am

The International Down Syndrome Coalition (IDSC) is currently featuring a campaign titled “Who I Am”. They have released a video (watch for it on my blog soon!) and are showcasing stories, blogs, and photos to create awareness for World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st (or 3/21) – Get it? When you have Down syndrome you have 3 of the 21st chromosome. Clever! Clearly, it is impossible for Eli to tell you who he is since he is only 4 months old. But as his mama, it is my pleasure to tell you who I think he is.

He is his Mommy’s heart

He is the apple of his Daddy’s eye

He is his brother’s best friend

He is his Nana’s little hero
(In fact, he’s a hero to all of us!)

He is his dog’s cuddle buddy

He is a heart warrior

He is an inspiration

He is a giggler

He is totally kissable

He is a perfect gift from God

And I am quite certain Eli will one day be…
A good friend
A pesky little brother
A hard worker
A fiery redhead
…no different from you or me (ok, maybe you all aren’t little brothers or redheads but you get the point!).

Eli makes me so proud to be his mommy. Because of him…
I am a better person.
I am more accepting.
I am an advocate.
I am blessed.
I am the luckiest girl in the world!

  1. Melanie,

Each time I read your blog, I am touched by the person you are: So amazing, such a good mother, an amazing artist , (writing as an art form), compassionate, and oh! So! SmartπŸ’πŸ’πŸ’

  2. Isn’t it amazing how someone so little can be so much? I was lurking around trying to get a look at what people are posting for “What I Am”. I like what you said about who you have become because of Eli.

    • Thank you! It is amazing that this tiny little boy has completely changed my life. It took 36 years for me to become the person I was meant to be. My son is the reason. I am so thankful!
